I arrived for the first time in Mahahual in 1996. After falling in love with La Mar Caribe on my first visit to Tulum in 1973, I continued coming to Q. Roo almost every year for vacation & to escape the long, cold Wisconsin winters. Tulum & Playa just got too big for me & my life`s partner, Sandy, so in March of 1996 we headed south to Mahahual where we met “Jungle Susie”, who was managing “Piratas Del Caribe”, a restaurant/bar with 3 cabanas( no longer there ! ) on the coast road south of Mahahual. We continued coming yearly, staying at Piratas, Garza Azul ( also, no longer in existence ) & finally at Kohunbeach. We watched Mahahual grow from a pueblo with no electricity, to the thriving, cruise-ship oriented village it is today. We hope it can maintain its rustic, laid-back, ambiance in the future !
